Trouba is overrated, he has done little to prove that he deserves 6-7m |

I dont think Trouba is that much an upgrade currently over EJ going into this season (long term yes but currently equal). I just am not really into the idea of burning a top assets to get him and wouldnt dramatically make this club any better going into the season.
He has a lot of potential but to burn a 1st round pick in a deal for him...thats bad future management in my mind |

I do love an actual answer...
Thinking about Trouba and to a larger extent, reading Rob Vollman's book on hockey analytics (and one book does not make me an expert), in his how to build a team section, there are to things that stuck with me. Don't overpay for a goalie unless he is truly elite (which is why i think Varly is gone by the expansion draft), and recognize your window for a cup. Good teams build towards a window and try to compete for 4-5 years in that window.
Let's say that Av's truly think their window in the last year of Dutch's contract, 2 years from now, and at that point they are going to have to determine if they are going to hand out 7yr/50M to him.
The core is MacK, Landy, Mikko, Barrie, hopefully either Bigras and/or Zads and if they are really lucky Jost and/or Compher.
Today, the advance stats show EJ is better, but...Is a 31 yr old Johnson part of that core? Is whatever F they pick in the next draft part of the core? At that point in time are they better off there or with Trouba?
We cant stay in rebuild forever...

I don't think he meant be in rebuild forever but that not having a farm team is gonna derail the team when we loose some of our players in a few years! Up until a few years ago we had no prospect depth aside from Landry Mack and duchene who stepped in right away! Still to this day our farm team could still get a bit more of an upgrade

I think I can agree with both Bob and Coga here. While I agree EJ/1st is overpaying for Trouba, Jacob does have more potential considering he is already on par with EJ at a younger age. Jacob would be a solid investment for the future and potentially a lockdown top pair D man for the next 6-10 years. So I could see it paying off in the long run.
On the other hand, We know EJ is capable of playing top minutes against the better lines in this league. Adding a 1st rounder to get a mirror image, if you will, of EJ doesn't seem to be the answer. There is no clear upgrade to be coughing up potentially another backbone piece for the farm. That's a large risk to take, considering the chance the Avs don't perform this year, and end up yet again with a top 10 pick.
If the Avs were a perennial playoff team, there is a lot less risk in such a major move. As much as I would love Trouba, I just don't see us making a move without having to give up a key defenseman, seeing as how WPG is in the same boat as COL. 100 centers and sparse on the wings. Unless Joe can pull off a miracle and obtain Trouba for a package deal sending something like 2nd/Comeau/X LHD. At the same time, that gives Greer/ Compher a shot to stake their claim to the club.
Just my take! |

No. Truba is not worth ej and a 1st. Straight ej for truba maybe, I think he could excel in the new system here, but for one he is not signed. So that needs to happen as well. Two, I don't see jets trading him in division. Three. If as were involved I see it being a truba + something for ej (example) + something. Joe is not giving up a 1st rounder. Overall in pretty happy with our d core here and to see how they pan out this year. If we were two years in with Nolan then I could see a trade happening if a few players weren't working out. But not this year

Thats how I feel. I want to see EJ, Barrie, Zads and to a lesser extent Weircoich and Gelinas now...see how they improve, if at all, under Bednar and Pratt.
I have Bigras starting in the AHL this year, to further develop andt to give siemens a chance to be a 7th/8th Dman. Take the chains off the top 3, and lets see if Weir and Gelly can rebound to be good 3rd pairing/fringe 2nd pairing guys that they were once pegged to be in their potential.
Next season if the D is still a disaster...then the team should be looking at other options |

I think if bigras can out play weir/gelly he stays. Only time will tell. But I think he does have a shot to stay with the bug club. But big minutes in the ahl is not a bad alternative. Would be interesting if he did make the big club and how the lines are made, but none the less im a lot more excited for this d core than I have been in a while and with what the forwards are doing great to help out and to get the puck out of our zone.

I think talent wise he should make the team right out of the gate, but with Beauch Tyutin on the roster, they will take a Top 6 for the 1st few games at least however one of them will get hurt eventually (esp Tyutin)
First call up Bigras is back in the game and they could roll a Top 6 of. Which would be super fun
Zads EJ
Weircoich Barrie
Bigras Gelly
